One of Tysons’ more prominent buildings may soon undergo a minor facelift.
The primary tenant of 1850 Towers Crescent Plaza — colloquially known as “that big round building” to southbound drivers on the Capital Beltway (I-495) — has asked Fairfax County officials to approve a plan to update the building’s exterior signage.
Bitcoin treasury company Strategy, which occupies eight of the building’s 13 floors, is seeking changes to reflect its recent pivot from software to cryptocurrency and subsequent rebranding from its former name of “MicroStrategy” earlier this year, as first reported by Washington Business Journal.
Under the proposal, the red “MicroStrategy” sign that faces Tysons Corner Center would be replaced by a 940-foot sign featuring the company’s new name and logo.
Only two signs in all of Fairfax County — both of them atop Capital One’s Tysons headquarters — would be larger than the proposed north-facing sign, the WBJ initially reported.
“Signs are a necessary means of visual communication for the public and are most effective when organized in a comprehensive fashion,” land use planner Bernard S. Suchicital wrote. “A properly designed series of signs creates a community identity and ensures adequate visual cues to ensure safe public access.”
The proposal also includes a 200-square-foot sign that has already been installed on the opposite side of the building. A permit for that sign was approved by county officials earlier this year.
Strategy has maintained a “long-standing” corporate headquarters at the building, which was initially constructed in 2008.
Founded in 1989, Strategy provides “cloud-native, AI-powered enterprise analytics software,” while also exploring “innovation in Bitcoin applications,” according to its website.
