A man was hospitalized after being shot in the West Oaks Corner neighborhood near Costco Thursday afternoon (May 28).
Police were dispatched to the 12200 block of Sessile Commons in Fair Oaks around 5:29 p.m. after 911 dispatchers received a call for a weapons discharge, according to scanner traffic.
“The caller heard what sounded like gunshots by West Oaks Road,” the dispatcher said. “They saw a male with a black pistol chasing a person on a bike.”
Upon arriving, officers found an adult man suffering gunshot wounds to his upper body, per the scanner. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with injuries initially described by police as life-threatening.
In an update shared Friday afternoon (May 29), the Fairfax County Police Department reported that the man’s condition had stabilized. The location of the shooting was also revised to the 12300 block of West Oaks Drive.
Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the victim was riding a “motorized bike” when he encountered a driver who stopped and got out of his car.
“After a brief verbal exchange, the shooter produced a firearm, shot into the air, and then shot the victim,” the FCPD said. “The shooter fled the area in a Toyota Camry prior to officers arriving.”
Police identified a suspect after finding a license plate number for the sedan that was seen fleeing the area. A Flock license plate reader picked up a vehicle with the corresponding plate, sending an alert to the FCPD’s Real Time Crime Unit and patrol officers who tracked it down in Centreville.
Officers conducted a traffic stop and took the driver — identified as 26-year-old Milad Attai from Fairfax — into custody around 9:20 p.m. last night, the FCPD said.
Currently held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond, Attai has been charged with malicious wounding, reckless discharge of a gun and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He’s scheduled to appear in Fairfax County General District Court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 10 at 2 p.m., per online court records.
