A motorcyclist has died following a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday, June 17 that fully shut down Richmond Highway (Route 1) in the Lorton area.
First responders, including police officers, medics and a helicopter, were dispatched to Richmond Highway at Mims Street at around 3:29 p.m. for a crash involving a motorcycle and a car, according to scanner traffic.
Initial reports indicated that the motorcycle rider was “thrown” from his bike.
The adult man — identified as Dwain Martin Jr., a 24-year-old Lorton resident — was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, from which he ultimately died, the Fairfax County Police Department said in an update on Thursday (June 18).
Richmond Highway closed to traffic in both directions for an extended period between Gunston Cove Road and Hassett Street during the police investigation. Traffic cameras operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation showed southbound backups extending as far north as Armistead Road near Gunston Plaza.

According to the FCPD, Martin appears to have been traveling north on Richmond Highway on a 2023 BMW S100 motorcycle when he crashed into a loaded trailer being pulled by a 2024 Ford F-650 truck, which was in the process of turning left into a business driveway from southbound Route 1.
Martin was then hit by the driver of a 2023 BMW 430i sedan who was heading south on Richmond Highway, police said.
The truck and sedan drivers both remained at the scene of the crash, which didn’t result in any injuries for them.
“Preliminary, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Speed remains under investigation,” the FCPD said in a press release. “Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.”
