A woman was killed earlier Friday (Sept. 18) after she was struck by a driver while traveling on Route 50 in a wheelchair.
Officers were dispatched at 7:27 p.m. to the Plaza Lane intersection just in front of Greenbriar Town Center near Chantilly after receiving a report of a pedestrian getting hit by a vehicle, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
“Preliminarily, CRU detectives determined Theresa Flynn, 53, of Chantilly, was using a mobility wheelchair while crossing Route 50 from south to north not in a crosswalk when she was struck by a Kia Rio traveling westbound,” the FCPD said in an update released on Saturday (Sept. 19).
Flynn was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said. The Kia driver remained at the scene of the crash and didn’t sustain any injuries.
Westbound Route 50 was reduced to one lane, as detectives with the FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated. Police advised drivers to find an alternate route.
Based on a preliminary investigation, the FCPD says “speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver,” meaning the Kia driver doesn’t appear to have been intoxicated or exceeding the posted speed limit at the time of the crash.
The speed limit is 45 mph on the six-lane section of Route 50 where the crash occurred, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. There are no crosswalks across Route 50 at Plaza Lane, despite that intersection being closer to a Fairfax Connector bus stop than one at Muirfield Lane to the east, where there is a striped crosswalk.
“Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the department said, adding that it has assigned victim specialists to help Flynn’s family receive “appropriate resources and assistance.”
Based on state data and FFXnow’s informal count, Flynn is the 15th pedestrian to be killed in a vehicle crash in Fairfax County so far this year and the second fatality in September following a crash that occurred on I-395 over Labor Day weekend, the Virginia State Police reported.
This is also the second fatal crash to take place in 2026 involving someone using a mobility device, following the death of a woman who was hit by a truck on Richmond Highway on July 2.
The driver remained on scene and was not injured. Westbound Route 50 at Plaza Ln is down to one lane. Please use an alternate route. Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit are responding to investigate. (2/2)
